PBs for Nic and Sophie in the Bedfordshire Open at Sandy

Well done to Sophie and Nic, who competed tonight in the Beds Open event at Sandy, Bedfordshire.

It was the evening of one of the hottest days this year - a balmy 27 degrees with a slight breeze.

When the 1500m runners were on the line, the starter’s gun failed four times, increasing the tension among the runners, and there was a short delay while the starter sorted the gun out.

Sophie and Nic both got PBs – Sophie’s time of 4:48.3 puts her 21st in England, just outside the qualifying time for English Schools, which is 4:48.

Here's Sophie's race report: 'I was happy with my race last night, even though I went out a few seconds too fast. I got a PB and I'm hoping maybe I'll have a shot at English Schools, as I was so close to the qualifying time. It was nice to see some of the girls in my age group that were competing as well. I enjoyed the evening.'

Nic's time was 4:43.0. He had this to say: ‘My race plan was to get out well and finish strongly, which I think I achieved. I was pleased with a good race and a PB on a hot day.'

Sophie and Nic will go on to compete in the Beds county champs on 31 July-1 August at Watford.

Well done to them both!

The meet was really well organised and at a lovely venue. Thank you to Richard Inchley, Dennis Johnson (Chair of Beds & Luton Schools Athletics) and everyone else involved for all their hard work in running this event. It was also lovely to see so many spectators by the track cheering on their athletes.
