800m gold for Alex Gruen at the Victorian Championships, Australia

Huge congratulations to MKDP’s Alex Gruen, who won gold in the open men’s 800m race in the 2021 Victorian Track and Field Championships in Melbourne, Australia, lastthis weekend. He won in a time of 1:52.14.

This has come hot on the heels of his bronze from last weekend in the 2020/21 Vic Milers meet at Box Hill, where Alex finished in a time of 4:11.62. See results at http://www.vicmilers.com/meets.php?fbclid=IwAR295zokl4iQI92_HBJ3jz-WZQJtjHeezIVbIJq9ckrH48oayG9lyg6OIXk

Alex was an MKDP member in its first year, as one of Kyle's athletes from university, and is still an MKDP member when he's in the UK. At the moment he’s running for Old Melburnians’ Athletics Club in Melbourne.

Alex had this to say about the races: ‘Coming into the Victorian Championships, I hadn't yet hit my best form this season. However, I've always really enjoyed championship races and I think they bring the best out of me. I was really pleased with my run in the Victorian Mile championships for 3rd, but left myself with a lot to do in the last few hundred metres. I resolved not to make a similar mistake in the 800-metre final and stayed right in the thick of things for the first 700 metres before working my way out of some congestion and striking for home in the final straight. It was great to have that reward for hard work and will hopefully be a good boost going into the rest of the season.’

This is Alex’s first senior gold medal – always a special one. Well done, Alex!
